When was the last time you thought about what you REALLY want in life? What would make you feel fulfilled, happy and successful? Time passes so fast and with everything moving a such a speed, you can get caught up in the hamster wheel of life. Then never stop to check you are going in the right direction. How can you truly be the boss of your life if you are not in charge of where it’s headed!
I’m talking about the vital importance of creating your success vision.
What is a Success Vision?
Unlike traditional goal setting, a success vision is a vivid, mental image of the future. It’s an all-encompassing picture of what life could look like if everything goes according to plan. It’s more than just career achievements; it’s the full spectrum of what matters most in your life. Everything from relationships to personal health, financial success, and emotional well-being.
When you’re clear on that image of what your successful life looks like, every action you take becomes a step towards a life that resonates with who you truly are.
Defining Your Unique Vision
Success looks different for everyone. We all have our own definitions, and that’s OK. Your success vision is personal to you and reflects your deepest desires—not what society or external influences dictate.
We’re often conditioned by societal rules. The belief that success is tied only to money, status, or staying in one career for life has slowly started to shift. But the remnants of these outdated ideas still remain, subtly influencing our aspirations. The challenge is to let go of what you’re “supposed” to want and embrace what you genuinely desire. Even if that goes against the grain.
That doesn’t mean that if you are happy following the ‘traditional’ path you can’t dream. You can have a success vision that aligns with what you want to achieve and who you want to be within that sphere. Remember, you are in control of making that success vision happen – you are not relying on anyone else to give you that promotion or that new job.
Are You Climbing the Right Ladder?
Stephen Covey, famously said, “If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.” This is a powerful reminder that clarity of vision is essential. Without it, you might spend years trying to reach the top of the wrong ladder, only to realise your true goals are elsewhere.
That’s why it’s so important to be clear on what success means for you. So you can ensure the ladder you’re climbing is leading to the life you want. ot what someone else thinks you should have.
My Go-To Success Vision Exercise
One of my favourite ways to clarify my vision is through what I like to call the “airport test,” inspired by Pat Flynn’s book, Will It Fly? Here’s how it works:
- Close your eyes and imagine: Picture yourself five years into the future. Visualise being in a public place—a bustling airport, a cozy restaurant, or a lively bar—where you bump into someone you know.
- Ask yourself: What would you say about your life? What needs to be in place—whether in work, relationships, or personal well-being—for you to be that person beaming with excitement?
- Write it down: Grab an A4 sheet and divide it into sections like “What I’m doing,” “What I have,” “Who I’m with,” and “How I feel.” This exercise helps you map out every detail of your ideal life and see if you’re on the right path.
I’ve repeated this exercise countless times, and every time, it helps me realign my actions with my deepest dreams. Listen to the episode to get more detail on this exercise!
My Top Tips for Success Visioning
Dream Big: Too often, we create visions based on what we think is realistic, which only limits our potential. Use your imagination to see what’s possible, even if it feels out of reach right now.
Choose the Right Moment: Do this when you’re feeling positive and optimistic. Your mindset can greatly influence your vision, so make sure you’re in a good place mentally before diving in.
Be Brutally Honest: This is your life, so don’t shy away from admitting what you REALLY want—even if it sounds a bit unconventional or means making a massive change.
To make this process easier, I have a free guided visualisation meditation called “The Magic Door,” which helps you immerse yourself in your future vision and bring clarity to what you really want. You can download it here
The Bottom Line is…
To lead your life like a boss, you need to know what you’re aiming for. Taking the time to craft a success vision that truly reflects your desires ensures that the path you’re on leads to a life that feels RIGHT.
One that you are wildly excited to live – every day.
Keep dreaming, keep questioning, and most importantly, keep leading your life!
