Let me let you into a secret. If you want to be a business owner, then you need to get used to learning! Because even once you've launched and are running your business, every day is a school day.

We're continuing with the focus on each of the five pillars that make up the career-to-entrepreneur method. Those pillars are mindset, preparation, habits, learning, and strategy. This time it's pillar four, ‘learning’, that takes centre stage.

If you want to be a business owner, I believe you have to enjoy learning. Or at the very least, not mind it.  So choose the way you learn best and stick with it.

WHERE TO START

You do need to have some kind of order or you'll find yourself jumping around from one topic to another and there is this danger you're going to get stuck in learning mode forever and never actually create your business.

So my advice would be to get a good basic understanding of business in general so you can choose the direction you want to take and then follow the business methodology of an expert you like and stick with it. Because when you start learning about business, there are so many strategies and ways of doing things.

All of these can work, but most can wait until you're more experienced or further along in your business.

WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING

Business basics:  You're going to be wearing lots of different ‘hats’, so things like finance, legal, marketing, social media, branding, sort of operational issues, compliance, the list goes on. And even if you plan to outsource some of it, you need to have a basic knowledge yourself.

Brush up on your specialist skills: You might have a lot of knowledge already if you're basing it on something you've already done as a career, or if it's something you've done as a hobby for a long time, or it might be new to you.

If you're going to take an area of interest and become a coach, or you're going to teach or you're going to do something different with it in some way, you might have a particular set of skills, so you might need to go and learn that, or do some further study.

Life of an entrepreneur: You also need to learn how to be a business owner because it's a different way of working from when you're in your job.

Mentally how you work and just practically how you work as well. You can learn about different styles of working and decide what is going to work for you.

HOW TO FIND THE KNOWLEDGE

Choose the learning methods that work best for you and stick with them.  If you love reading you can learn from books and articles and free guides.

If you like listening to things, then you could listen to podcasts.

Of course, YouTube is a fantastic resource for all kinds of learning, but particularly you can learn about business there as well.

I do have a YouTube channel. So if you prefer to watch me rather than just be listening to me, then do check that out.

To learn about entrepreneurial ways of working, you need to meet other business owners. So join networking groups on and offline and attend some events as well where you'll meet other aspiring and actual entrepreneurs.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS…

Learning is going to be a big part of your life as a business owner.

So start getting into a learning mentality. Choose the ways you like to learn and get started as soon as you can.

Remember, if you don't try, you will never know if you could have succeeded.

Don't wait to start. This is your time.
