How prepared are you to become your own boss, to say goodbye to the structures and rules of the employee world?
Because the move from the employee world to being your own boss is a massive change, but being aware of what to expect and preparing for those first few months will set you up for success.
Here are three common mistakes that people make when transitioning from employee to entrepreneur, and how to avoid them:
MISTAKE #1: Underestimating the magnitude of the change and its impact on them
Many people are not mentally prepared for the shift from being an employee to being their own boss. They are often surprised by the sense of anti-climax and the feelings of loneliness that come with making all the decisions. To overcome this, before you leave your job connect with other entrepreneurs and business owners who will become your new tribe, your new work family. Then arrange regular catch-ups with them in the weeks following your leave date. Having people around you that understand and have probably gone through the same transition, will make all the difference.
MISTAKE #2: Failing to consider alternative ways of working
Some new entrepreneurs don't realise that they can work differently, and they end up replicating their old work patterns because they have not thought beyond their ‘employee’ conditioning. To avoid this, think about your personality, strengths, weaknesses, and values. Design your work routine, environment, and even what you wear based on your preferences.
MISTAKE #3: Jumping straight from their job into their business without taking a break
Taking a break between your job and going all out in your new business is essential. Consider this time as an investment in yourself and your business. Plan for a one to three-week break to decompress, recharge, and prepare for your new life as an entrepreneur.
DECLUTTER
During your break, consider decluttering your life. Get rid of any physical items, documents, or even people related to your life as an employee that no longer serve a purpose in your life. This process will help you close the door to the past and make room for your new future.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS…
The move from the employee world to being your own boss is a massive change, but being aware of what to expect and preparing for those first few months will really help when it comes to your independence date.
Don’t underestimate this time. It is a big step and you should want to mark it and celebrate it. But also be kind to yourself and understand that you won’t throw off all those years of employee conditioning overnight. Embrace your new role as your own boss, and you'll soon find it hard to imagine any other life!
