#27: The 'B-word' You Need To Quit Using

What B-word can all of us confess to believing ourselves to be at some time or another? Well thinking you are this can be disruptive when you are  looking to make a leap to a passion and meaning filled new career and life. So it’s time to stop worrying about it and maybe start seeing it as  a blessing in disguise.

It’s a short and snappy today, but with a message you will not want to miss.

Can’t listen right now?

Don’t worry, I have you covered...here are some of the key points!

I wanted to talk about what I was thinking  as I lay on that couch, physically unable to do anything productive other than flick through Netflix or Prime video,  and order take out.

It is a ‘b-word’ we all think we are at some time or another, and that can be destructive when you are working towards something important in your life.

All I could think about was how ‘behind’ I was.  Every min, every hour, every day I was lying there I was losing time and falling further behind my deadlines and goals. I’m in the middle of a project,  that has tight deadlines and all I could think about those deadlined slipping away.  I felt frustrated and blamed myself for putting myself in the position that I got sick, I started stressing out about how I would catch up and how hard i was going to have to work when I was back at my desk.  Part of that of course was because when you're sick you don’t think clearly and also emotionally you are vulnerable. But feeling ‘behind’ on something,  and  the thoughts and feelings that are triggered because of that, is really common.   Being stressed, panicked and angry at yourself are classic symptoms and they don’t do you any favours because they don’t help the situation.

When I started to feel better I remembered that I am my own boss, I have control over most of my deadlines and although I needed to do some juggling with my schedule, and re-prioritise some elements, I really wasn’t actually behind.  Afterall, who was I behind, myself?! Yes, you need to keep to deadlines and goals but not to the detriment of your mental health or motivation.

That’s what I wanted to share with you. You are never behind when you are running your own race.  So, when you want to transform your life, by moving to a career that encompasses your passions and has more meaning and impact than your current job, it is not something that will happen overnight.  It’s going to take time, planning and patience.  Sometimes your day job or family life, or like me illness,  will get in the way of your plans, and you may even have to put those plans on hold for a while.  I want to tell you that that is fine.

You are in control of your journey and your timeline, so if something comes up unexpectedly you just need to readjust, re-focus and start again.

Unlike in your dayjob, where you may or may not have control over your deadlines, you have full management of your transformation to a passion filled career and life.

Every person who has ever wanted to make a big change to uplevel their life, to achieve fulfillment in their work, to make their dreams a reality, started where you are now.  They knew they wanted to do something more with their lives, they made a plan and kept going, whatever was thrown at them until they achieved their goal, however long that took.  I know that’s what I did and I know that’s what you will do too.

Another thing I wanted to share was that  sometimes a delay can be a godsend, it can stop you steaming off in the wrong direction.  Time away from a project can give you a new perspective or fresh motivation that you would not have got if you had kept going without a break.

So when you are delayed in your plans, think about the silver lining, maybe you have been delayed for a reason and look for what that could be!

What happened for me this time was I watched a tv programme,  while I was resting on that couch, that gave me a fresh idea on the project I’m working on.  Something i wouldn't have thought about if I had not seen that particular programme, which I normally would have missed as I would have been working! I don’t know yet how big a difference it will make but it could be really significant, and I could have missed it, if I hadn’t been sick.  In my experience there is always some good to come out of something that you think has put you behind!

The Bottom Line is...

There will be times when your plans to escape your current career don’t go to plan. Sometimes that feeling of being behind will bring back other fears that will threaten your resolve to change your life.

You will start to doubt if you should do it at all.  Don’t let it!

You are not too old, or too young, you are not too experienced or not experienced enough, you are not too late or too early in your career to make this happen.  You are in the perfect place from which to transform your career and life and that is now.  Whether you have a long road or a short one to reach your goals, are just starting now having put it off for a long time or are starting again after a break, now is the time to take action and keep going.

So remember, you are never behind. You are in your own race. You are just where you need to be, even if it does not immediately seem that way.  Focus on your vision, your purpose, your plan and most of all your passion!
